DIY French Mattress Cushion

I have never put off a project as I have with this French mattress cushion. When I convinced my husband to make a window bench in our master bedroom a long time ago, I knew I wanted a french mattress style cushion. I searched online, and I found a couple of vendors that confirmed my suspicion; french mattress style cushions are pricy. My window bench has an odd shape, so I would need a custom order a cushion, which means it’ll be more expensive. Being a crafty person, I checked some DIY videos and blogs about making a french mattress, and it didn’t seem so difficult. I started working on the cushion just as soon as we finished making the window bench, but my work wasn’t complete until now. I was intimidated by the size of the project, and I procrastinated, not wanting to commit to the level of effort. 

Did I mention that I have no experience making upholstery and that I’m fairly new to sewing? While I have a sewing machine, I have only used it, maybe, ten times since I bought it. However, after more than a year of procrastination, I decided to dive in headlong and make my own custom french mattress style cushion.

For this project, I used canvas drop cloths as the fabric; the main reason was that I didn’t want to spend too much money on expensive material that I may ruin. Plus, I like the look of canvas, and it is super husband/pet friendly.

Making a French mattress cushion is a lot of work. My hands and finger were in pain after day one; keep in mind my cushion is enormous, and I learned a lot through this process. I should have started with something a little smaller, but after more than a year of procrastination, I was full of energy to get this done.

Nunca habia pospuesto un proyecto como lo hice con este cojin estilo colchón francés. Cuando convencí a mi esposo de que hiciera el asiento  de ventana en nuestro dormitorio principal hace mucho tiempo, sabia que quería un cojín de este tipo. Busqué en línea y encontré un par de vendedores que confirmaron mi sospecha; Los colchones de estilo francés son caros. El asiento de mi ventana tiene una forma extraña, lo que significa que necesitaría un pedido personalizado de un cojín, lo que significa que sería más costoso. Siendo una persona crafty, revisé algunos videos y blogs sobre cómo hacer un colchón francés, y no parecía tan difícil. Comencé a trabajar en el cojín tan pronto como terminamos de hacer el banco de la ventana, pero lo deje en la fase inicial y recien termine. Estaba intimidada por el tamaño del proyecto, y postergué, no queriendo comprometerme con el nivel de esfuerzo.

¿Mencioné que no tengo experiencia haciendo tapicería y que soy bastante nuevo en la costura? Si bien tengo una máquina de coser, solo la he usado, tal vez, diez veces desde que la compré. Sin embargo, después de más de un año de procrastinación, decidí que ya era tiempo de terminar lo que comencé y completar el asiento colchón francés.

Para este proyecto, utilicé telas de lona como tela; La razón principal fue que no quería gastar demasiado dinero en material costoso que podría arruinar. Además, me gusta el aspecto de la lona después de blanquearla con lejia.

Hacer un colchón francés es bastante trabajo. Me dolían las manos y los dedos después del primer día; tenga en cuenta que mi cojín es enorme, y aprendí mucho a través de este proceso. Debería haber comenzado con algo un poco más pequeño. Pero ya no había vuelta atrás.
