Today I’m going to show you how my husband and I built a window bench for our master bedroom.
I’ve had this project burning in the back of my mind for a long time. Initially, I really wanted a window bench with drawers however after finally convincing my husband to build one I made a mistake on one of the dimensions. I knew that the general height for a window bench was around 18”, but it wasn’t the best height for our window; however, I didn’t quite put all that together. My Husband was more than 50% complete with the framing when I noticed the bench was going to be too tall; the cushion would have been at the same level as the windows and that was a deal-breaker for me. I was so focused on the drawers I didn’t pay enough attention to the height we were using. I told my husband we needed to demo and redo it from scratch and that wasn’t what he wanted to hear, he wasn’t happy. I thought the best way to mitigate his frustration of making the bench all over again was to ditch the drawers. From the beginning, my husband didn’t want to make a bench with drawers. He went on about how drawers were going to be too difficult and that he had not done work like that since high school; If you’ve followed me for a while you might be thinking “what! I thought he works construction.” but alas, he’s a nerd… ha, ha, ha! a systems engineer that knows how to use powers tools is a hard specimen to find. Making a window bench with a trunk is definitely less time-consuming. This made building everything again a lot more palatable for him but he was still frustrated by the previous build. The moral of the story is that each bench is going to be a little different and needs to be based on your space and never forget the height of the cushion 🙂
After all the drama the dust settled and everything else went smoothly. For our bench, we used standard 2×4 whitewood studs for the framing, 3/4 Birch plywood for the top, and 11/32in Pine Plywood for the front.

Hoy voy a mostrarles cómo mi esposo construyó el asiento bajo la ventana en nuestro dormitorio principal. Yo tenia este proyecto en mi mente por mucho tiempo.
Inicialmente quería una ventana con cajones, pero después de convencer a mi esposo de que construyera uno, cometí un error en una de las dimensiones. Sabía que la altura general para el asiento de la ventana es de alrededor de 18 “, pero no era la mejor dimensión para nuestro espacio. Cuando mi esposo ya estaba casi a la mitad de la construcción noté que el asiento era demasiado alto para el look que yo quería; el cojín iba a quedar al nivel que las ventanas y eso no me gustaba. Estaba tan concentrada en los cajones que no presté demasiada atención a la altura. Le dije a mi esposo que teníamos que demoler y volver a hacerlo. Déjenme decirles que no estaba contento. Pensé que la mejor manera de mitigar su frustración era hacer el asiento nuevo sin cajones. Para empezar, mi esposo no quería hacer un asiento con los cajones, dice que son difíciles de hacer y que la única vez que los hizo fue en el colegio, en este momento puedes estar pensando ¡qué! Pensé que tu esposo trabajaba en construcción, no; él es un nerd … ja, ja, es un ingeniero de sistemas que sabe cómo usar las herramientas eléctricas, son un tipo muy difícil de encontrar. Hacer el asiento con un baúl es definitivamente más sencillo y tomará menos tiempo. La moraleja de la historia de cada asiento será un poco diferente. Escojan las dimensiones que funciona para su espacio; no olvides la altura del cojín en la ecuación.
Después de todo el drama, la construcción del segundo asiento corrió sin complicaciones.
