Let start by saying I know I’m not the only one spending endless nights browsing through Pinterest and pinning home improvement projects. While I’m pinning away and thinking I’m going to make all of these projects, if you follow me on Pinterest you’ll see that my “Home Ideas Board” is full of great ideas, I’ve seriously been thinking, for over a year, about installing board and batten (wainscoting) throughout my walls. I had seen this project all over Pinterest and it didn’t seem to be so difficult or even that expensive…
After a little convincing, I persuaded my husband to work on remodeling our guest bathroom; he wasn’t very excited because, for him, our house looks great already. This was our first time working on a more advanced home improvement, DIY project and it was exciting. While I really like our house, I want it to be unique and not feel like a cookie-cuter home.
Because we learn from our mistakes, here are a couple of things I wish I had done, or knew, before starting the project. I highly recommend keeping this in mind:
- Plan everything you want to change in the room. Remember, you’re going to remodel or update based on your budget. I was thinking we’ll just do the board and battens and paint the bathroom but at the end, we ended up trimming the window and changing the vanity to a DIY Rustic Vanity!
- As I mentioned, for over a year I’ve been wanting to install board and batten (wainscoting) throughout my house, but when the time came and my husband asked me how high I wanted them and how much space I wanted between the battens… I was like ”Uhhh… let me check…” (picture me searching all over my “Home Ideas Board” on Pinterest over and over again). In the end, I decided to go with 58” high and 16” between the battens. Remember the height and spacing all up to you and there’s no guide that will give you all of the answers.
- A lot of projects for board and batten that you see on Pinterest are made with MDF, but I wouldn’t recommend that for any place where there may be water. We used common wood boards in the following sizes: [1×2, 1×3, 1×4]. The prices weren’t bad and you can do a lot in just about any budget using furring strips, common boards, and premium wood. Each wood type comes with various pros and cons; premium won’t need a lot of sanding, common boards may need some tune-ups but have a good price, and furring strips are cheap.
- When I decided to make the height of this project 58 inches I wasn’t thinking about how much wood I would’ve saved if I had only made the height of the chair rail at 48” (4 feet). Many suppliers sell wood boards at 8 feet long and that means I could of had two battens for every one board. Keep in mind that these recommendations are completely up to you. In my case I opted to have higher battens as my walls are 9 feet tall and I wanted the height of each batten to be half of the total height. Additionally, if you are using MDF the boards are usually 4×8’ so keep this in mind.
- When we removed the light fixture from our bathroom, we realized there was a big hole in the wall behind the light fixture. If I had planned to remove the fixture in the beginning I would’ve made some modifications allowing us to change the location and type of light fixture.
- There are two kinds of primer: oil based and water based. We bought oil based by mistake and didn’t realize we had an option. Turns out that oil-based primer is a great for bathroom walls and can be used to cover up dark colors. We originally had a blue wall and it was completely covered up with the primer. However, if we had to do it all over again I would have used water base primer. Why? Oil-based primer has a really strong (smell) and my husband and I had a big headache when we were done so get a mask when painting, especially in small spaces.
- When you are making a DIY project it’s almost always going to be cheaper than hiring a professional but remember you may also need to invested in a couple of tools to make your projects; holiday sales like Black Friday and Christmas are great times to get tools!!!
- Plan your project and get estimates for the true cost. Home Depot and Lowes have great websites that can show you the true cost of material. My husband always makes fun of me when I tell him that, “Pinterest says the project is going to cost so much…” he jokingly replies, “Well, if it’s on Pinterest, it must be true!” the fact is that prices change and are different in various markets so do your research.
Comencemos diciendo, que espero no ser la única que pasó su noche navegando buscando ideas en Pinterest y marcando proyectos que pienso hacer en mi casa. Mientras voy pensando hare este proyecto y este…. (si usted me sigue en Pinterest usted verá que mi “Home Ideas Board” está lleno de proyectos geniales), Estuve pensando por bastante tiempo mas de un año sobre la instalación de “board and batten” en mis paredes. Este proyecto esta por todo lado en Pinterest y la parece ser no tan complicado ni costoso.
Después de convencer y persuadir a mi esposo para trabajar en la remodelación de nuestro baño de visitas, él no estaba muy emocionado porque para él nuestra casa no necesita ninguna mejora. A mi me gusta mucho nuestra casa, pero quiero que no se sienta como una casa hecha con cortador de galletas, quiero que sea única en el interior y que tenga mi estilo. Ésta fue nuestra primera vez que trabajamos en un proyecto de mejora de la casa.
Ya que siempre se aprende de los errores, aquí hay un par de cosas que desearía haber hecho o saber antes de iniciar el proyecto que recomiendo que tenga en cuenta.
- Planifica todo lo que desea cambiar en la habitación. Recuerdo todos los cambios que hagas están basados en tu presupuesto. Yo pensé que solo haríamos los “board and batten” y pintar el baño pero al final, terminamos enmarcando la ventana y cambiar el lavadero y haciendo un mueble para este.
- Como les menciones, durante más de un año tenia planeado instalar los “Board and batten” en toda mi casa, pero cuando llegó el momento y mi esposo me preguntó qué tan alto yo quería y cuánto espacio quería entre los listones … Yo era como “Uhhh … déjame revisar …” (Piensa que en ese momento me puse a revisar mi carpeta de proyecto de casa en Pinterest). Al final, decidí ir con 58″ 1 metro 48 cm de alto y 40 cm” entre los listones. Recuerde la altura y el espaciamiento todo depende de tus preferencias
- Una gran cantidad de proyectos de “Board and Batten” que se ven en Pinterest son hechos con MDF, pero yo no recomendaría usarlo en un espacio donde hay agua, como por ejemplo el baño. Nosotros usamos tableros comunes de madera en los siguientes tamaños: [1×2, 1×3, 1×4]. Los precios no son muy altos. En la tienda encontraras 3 tipos de listones por lo general, una son las tiras de tapajuntas que son bien baratas, otras son las tiras comunes que son de precio regular y los mas caros son de madera premium. Cada tipo de tiras tienes pros y contras; Premium no necesitará lijado, las juntas comunes pueden necesitar algunos ajustes, pero tienen un buen precio, y las tira de tapajuntas son baratas pero necesitas mas lijado.
- Cuando decidí hacer la altura de este proyecto de 58 pulgadas, no estaba pensando en la cantidad de madera que habría ahorrado si sólo hubiera hecho la altura de 48 “(4pies) que es 1 metro 20 cm. Muchos proveedores venden tableros de madera a 8 pies de largo y eso significa que podría haber tenido dos listones para cada tabla. Tenga en cuenta que estas son solo recomendaciones, las dimensiones dependen de tu gusto. En mi caso, opté por tener listones más altos, ya que mis paredes tienen 9 pies de alto y quería que la altura del board and batten fuera la mitad de la altura total. Además, si usted está usando MDF tengan presente que este se vende en placas de 4 x 8 pies.
- Cuando quitamos la lámpara que va encima de tocador, nos dimos cuenta de que había un gran agujero en la pared detrás de la lámpara. - Hay dos tipos de primer: uno es a base de aceite y el otro a base de agua. Compramos el de base de aceite por error no sabíamos que habían dos tipos de primer. Pero tuvimos suerte de que resulta que usar primer de aceite es bueno en ambientes como el baño o cuando quieres cubrir colores fuertes. Originalmente teníamos una pared azul que fue completamente cubierto con el primer. Sin embargo, si tuviéramos que hacerlo todo de nuevo, habría utilizado primer base de agua. ¿Por qué? El primer a base de aceite tiene un fuerte olor y mi esposo y yo tuvimos un gran dolor de cabeza después de pintar, les recomiendo usar mascaras especialmente cuando estén pintando un espacio pequeño
- Cuando estas haciendo un proyecto de este tipo tu misma definitivamente vas a ahorrar dinero comprado a contratar a un profesional, sin embargo ten en cuenta que es necesario invertir en herramientas. Las ventas de Black Friday y la Navidad son el mejor tiempo para comprar herramientas a buenos precios
- Planifique tu proyecto y obtén estimaciones del costo real. Home Depot y Lowes tienen excelentes sitios web que pueden mostrarle el verdadero costo del material. After all of the dust settled I decided to install all the brass fixtures. If you like the “antique brass” there aren’t a lot of options especially when compared to “chrome” or “nickel”. In my case I was fortunate enough to find almost everything on Amazon.
Finally, the only thing left was to find the perfect light fixture that completed the whole look for my guest bathroom, awesomely enough I was so lucky to find Feiss Urban Renewal 21 1/2; Wide Antique Brass Bath Light from Lamps Plus! This fixture is beautiful, extremely well made and worked perfect for my space. They sell a ton of options, which are perfect in most circumstances, all at great prices.
Finalmente, lo único que me quedaba era encontrar el accesorio de luz perfecto que completó todo el aspecto de mi baño de invitados, Fui muy afortunado y tuve la suerte de encontrar la lámpara llamada Feiss Renovación Urbana de Lamps Plus! Este lámpara es hermosa y esta muy bien hecha, me fascina. Si estás buscando lámparas les recomiendo visitar Lamps Plus website, ellos tienen una gran variedad de lámparas y excelentes precios.
