One of the questions I get asked all the time is, “do I need a heat press when using heat transfer vinyl?” The answer is No; you can use a home iron, which is a great option for hobbyists, especially when making only a couple projects a month. I’ve found most folks start with an iron, in fact, I started with an iron. My first project was a pillow cover, which ended in a fiasco, but eventually, I learned how to use the iron with heat transfer vinyl. After my fiasco, I learned that one of my big mistakes was with the pressure I was using. To get a perfect transfer you need a combination of temperature, time, and pressure. Sadly, controlling all of the factors to get the best transfer with iron is difficult, even if you’re careful.
If you’re planning to make a couple dozen projects a week you may need to start thinking about a heat press. Heat presses are great, they are really easy to use and will save you a lot of time. If you are selling custom-made products then you should absolutely invest in a heat press. Your clients will be far more satisfied receiving a quality product made using a heat press.
